Your Options in Divorce. (Hint: There Are Only Two)

By far, the most common question I get when someone is new to the divorce space is, “What are my options?”

My response is always the same: stay married or get divorced.

I know this may seem simplistic. Especially if you are one of those people right now wondering the same thing. But you’re really just trying to find out what the divorce process will look like if you decide to go through with it. And if it’s too much trouble – or too painful – you won’t do it. Or you will put it off.

What this question tells me is that you haven’t really decided yet that you want a divorce. Because the people who really want a divorce – the ones who have already decided – don’t ask what their options are. They don’t need to. They know they are going through with it no matter what.

So this is what I can tell you – and what I do tell people when they ask me this question.

I can’t tell you exactly what your divorce will look like, because there are so many other factors. But I can tell you that you will be okay. I have never seen anyone not be ok. You either want your life to be different - and you’re committed to achieving that - or not.

One of my favorite quotes is, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” ~Henry Ford
